I've already maxed out the RAM, can I do anything else to make my Toshiba run faster?

Then you should consider replacing your existing HDD with an SSD(solid state drive)

Upgrading the memory in your computer is usually the first step to increasing it's performance. Additional memory allows you to run more applications simultaneously without the computer slowing down. It also allows you to multi-task to a much greater degree as your applications, email, web browsing, etc. all have more RAM to use to run efficiently.

However additional RAM does not solve all the issues of a "slow" computer. If you find that it takes Windows a long time to load or your spreadsheets are taking minutes before they are ready to use, then you should consider swapping out your old spinning HDD for an SSD.

SSDs will run up to 12 times faster then a HDD and will have Windows loading and ready to use within seconds instead of minutes. All complex programs, high res video, complex audio and other large applications will load, ready to use, within seconds instead of taking several minutes before being ready to utilise.

In a working environment, waiting minutes each time a new program loads or for your computer to be ready to use, is a time consuming and costly exercise. Added up, wait times increase to hours lost when totaled over the course of just a week.

None of us here have that kind of time to waste, do you?

My Toshiba has one memory module already, do I need to match it's size when upgrading?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked and the answer overwhelmingly is no.

A large majority of notebooks have 2 memory slots which can be upgraded with either one or two modules. They are all shipped with an existing module, usually of low capacity to keep the initial cost of the computer down.

However when upgrading these types of notebooks you do not have to remove the existing module and put in a matching pair. It is just as effective to keep the existing module and put in any capacity memory module which has been deemed acceptable by the manufacturer.

For instance many Toshiba laptops built from 2012-2016 had 2 memory upgrade slots and were shipped with a single 4gb module and had a maximum RAM capacity of 16gb. You are not limited to the choices of only adding 4gb module or having to remove the 4gb and add 2x8gb modules. The laptop will run just as effectively by keeping the existing 4gb and adding 1x8gb module to take the amount of RAM in the laptop to 12gb in total.

Unfortunately for most of us finances play a role in these decisions and adding a single, large capacity module to an empty slot is the most cost effective way to improve our computer's performance.

When searching for my model, do I need to find the exact model to get the correct RAM?

Yes. Most definitely yes.

Many manufacturers will utilise model numbers through a number of hardware changes which in turn take different upgrades and require different components.

Just a simple example is the Satellite C850 series. The early version took DDR3 1333mhz so-dimms. The maximum amount of RAM that could be installed was 8gb via 2x4gb modules. The latter versions of the C850 series require DDR3 1600mhz so-dimms. The maximum amount of RAM that can be installed in these is 16gb via 2x8gb modules. Both examples of the C850 have 2 memory slots, but each one takes a different spec module and the later model can be upgraded to a higher maximum then the early version.

The best way to be exact is to find your product/part number of the laptop. On the bottom of each Toshiba laptop is a 12 digit product/part code.

It will usually start out with something like PSTxxx-xxxxxx, or PSAxxx-xxxxxx.

If you have any doubts about which RAM to purchase for your Toshiba laptop, just contact us with the product/part code and we can point you in the right direct.

It's always better to get it right the first time.

My current memory is "x" brand, will your module work with my existing memory?

Yes.  All Upgradeable memory that is advertised for Toshiba is model specific. The reason we sell the Micron/Crucial memory is that we know it is not only compatible with the device you specified, but also that we know it will work with your existing memory.

Many suppliers will suggest that a type of no-name, generic brand RAM will be compatible with your device, however we have discovered with nearly 20 years of experience that it is best to purchase a brand that the manufacturer themselves will utilise.

Most manufacturers like Toshiba will only use 3 brands of memory, Samung, Micron/Crucial and Hynix. Those three suppliers manufacture over 90% of the world's RAM and the memory supplied is the most reliable available, hence the reason why we supply it.

If your Toshiba laptop came with a Samsung module, then installing a Micron/Crucial module alongside will never experience any compatible issues as the 3 main manufacturers all adhere to the same strict guidelines to produce excellent quality RAM that can be utilised together.

What is the maximum amount of RAM my Toshiba can take?

Unfortunately there is no simple answer to this question.  There are many factors which can determine how much RAM your Toshiba can take.

In general, the newer the model, the more RAM you can install.  However a specified business model may have 2 upgradeable RAM slots but an ultrabook model may not have any upgradeable RAM slots.  Thus a slightly older business specified model with 2 memory slots can take 16gb, but a new ultrabook may be limited to 8gb.

The other key factor is how many memory slots does your Toshiba contain. Most notebooks have 2 upgrade slots. Some have one, yet quite a few models have the RAM soldered onto the motherboard and the RAM cannot be upgraded.

There are quite a number of general answers to this question, but no hard and fast rules. Toshiba laptops with 2 memory slots, built from 2012-2016 with intel core i5 and i7 CPUs largely take 16gb of RAM maximum via 2x8gb RAM modules.Whereby lower end celeron models generally only take 8gb maximum utilising 2x4gb modules.

However these are only guidelines; finding your exact model online or asking one of our upgrade specialists is the only definitive way to find out how much RAM you can install in your Toshiba.

How do I find my Toshiba model number?

1. Flip your Toshiba laptop over and locate the sticker on the back of the case. Note the number next to "Model No.," "Part No." or "Satellite." This is the model-part number.

2. Power on the Toshiba laptop. Click the "Start" button on your desktop, and then right-click "Computer." Click "Properties." The model number may appear in the Properties window.

3. Click the "Start" button, then click "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "System Information." The model number appears here.
